Wilmington, Mass. – October 22, 2007 – Polychromix Incorporated, an innovative developer of material analysis and chemical sensing technologies, today announced a purchase agreement with Shaw Industries for the award winning PHAZIR™ hand held material analysis system. The PHAZIRS™ will be deployed throughout a nationwide carpet collection network that supplies and supports Shaw’s nylon recycling operations based in Augusta, Georgia.
“We have worked with Shaw over many months to configure an identification tool that will allow them to rapidly, accurately and cost effectively sort various waste carpet materials for recycling at their Evergreen facility in Augusta” said Brian Mitchell, CEO of Polychromix. “Shaw Industries is the world’s largest manufacturer of carpet and carpet fiber and is also the leader in green initiatives targeted at reducing the environmental effects associated with the disposal of post consumer carpet and flooring materials. The PHAZIR™ allows collectors, sorters and processing technicians to quickly and cost effectively sort the various waste materials for the proper recycling process. “
The PHAZIR™ platform integrates a high performance DTS™ (Digital Transform Spectrometer), an on- board computer, color LCD display, and necessary analytical software to offer a complete measurement solution in a battery powered, handheld package. The PHAZIR™’s performance and portability has led to rapid acceptance of the platform in a number of government and commercial markets.
“Our Evergreen Nylon Recycling operation employs patented technology that converts post consumer nylon carpet into caprolactam, the raw material used to make nylon 6. By recycling these waste carpet fibers we are able to prevent up to 300 million pounds of carpet from reaching solid landfills each year” stated Steve Bradfield, Shaw’s director of environmental affairs. “It is critical to our recycling operation that only nylon 6 waste fibers be introduced into the recycling process at our Evergreen facility.”
